Mastering Financial Acumen and Strategic Thinking


Course Overview:


This course introduces key accounting principles to help participants understand how to evaluate the financial viability of a business, as employee financial literacy is crucial to business success. Paticipants will learn how to calculate net worth, cost of business activities, and key financial ratios. The concepts of revenue and expense recognition will be demonstrated, as well as how to control cash and analyze cash flow and financial statements. The course also includes important managerial concepts such as cost-volume-profit,relevant costing and quality management. Participants will learn to apply financial and managerial accounting principals through group assignment and case work.


Week 1:
Personal Accounting

Understand the importance of financial literacy. Understand fundamentals of accounting for net worth, assets and liabilities. Distinguish accrual accounting from cash accounting. Identify the basic financial statements.

Week 2:
Introduction to Business Accounting & Revenue and Expense Recognition

Understand how accounting concepts influences business reporting. Describe the difference between current and long-term assets and liabilities. Describe the three ways to recognize revenue and three ways to recognize expenses. Discuss the ethics surrounding revenue and expense recognition.

Week 3:
Cost Allocation & Cost- Volume-Profit

Identify the costs associated with inventory and how to calculate gross profit. Differentiate between variable and absorption costing. Understand cost behavior and perform break-even analysis. Describe how a business cost structure impacts operating leverage.


Week 4:
Adjustments & Cash Flow

Learn the importance of adjustments and how bad debt and depreciation impacts the business. Discuss inventory shrinkage and the ethical issues related to inventory and adjustments. Learn the purpose of the cash flow statement and how it is prepared.

Week 5:
Trade Math, Financial Analysis & Balanced Scorecard

Understand the concepts of mark-ups, discounts and up-selling. Perform ratio analysis on financial statements to determine the financial health of a company. Apply the balance scorecard and key performance indicators.

Week 6:
Internal Controls, Relevant Cost & Quality Management

Learn about implementing controls to check and regulate business operations. Understand the concept of relevant costs. Learn how to apply relevant costs to various business decisions. Describe Just-In-Time (JIT) and total quality management.
